Generally, included wages are those promised by the employer through an employee contract.

Excluded Wages

Wages excluded often consist of jury duty pay, overtime, severance packages, shift differentials, company bonuses that are not included in commissions and other wage-related bonuses, and benefits such as tuition reimbursement. Because these types of income are often not part of an employer’s compensation package, they are not included in statistics for average salaries. Generally, these types of compensation are considered “fringe benefits”.

Other Salary Data

Along with the average salary, statistics often include median wages to analyze salaries based on percentiles. The median salary is the 50th percentile, or the exact middle, according to the Social Security Administration. Salaries not in the 50th percentile are lower than or higher than the median. The percentiles reflect salaries that may not be equal.

To give an example, the lowest percentiles may reflect salaries for those who are entry-level and the highest percentiles may reflect those who have many years of professional experience. Percentiles may also reflect salaries on a national scale and cost-of-living differentials in geographical regions. For every year that follows, that same data center goes on to support 157 local jobs paying $7.8 million in wages. It injects $32.5 million into the local economy and generates $1.1 million in revenue to state and local governments.
The economic benefits of data centers can be seen here in Alabama, where they have been a significant boost to the state economy. Google is currently building a $600 million data center in Jackson County and plans to create over 100 high-paying jobs. Other major companies such as Blue Cross and Blue Shield, AT&T, and Atlanta-based power company Southern Company have already invested millions of dollars building data centers around Birmingham.
Across the country, data centers are powering communities, creating jobs, and driving economic growth. They support local communities both directly and indirectly through improving public infrastructure such as roads, power lines, water, and sewage systems and providing millions of dollars to local governments. Despite the fact that hardware is constantly getting smaller, faster and more powerful, we are an increasingly data-hungry species, and the demand for processing power, storage space and information in general is growing and constantly threatening to outstrip companies' abilities to deliver.
Any entity that generates or uses data has the need for data centers on some level, including government agencies, educational bodies, telecommunications companies, financial institutions, retailers of all sizes, and the purveyors of online information and social networking services such as Google and Facebook. Lack of fast and reliable access to data can mean an inability to provide vital services or loss of customer satisfaction and revenue.
A study by International Data Corporation for EMC estimated that 1.8 trillion gigabytes (GB), or around 1.8 zettabytes (ZB), of digital information was created in 2011 [sources: Glanz, EMC, Phneah]. All of this media has to be stored somewhere. Yes, I have freelanced workers online while holding a full-time development job. It is possible, but everything needs to be right. Any time you do something like this, it is important to act with integrity ... both to your employer and the person you are working with. If you don't, it will likely all cave in on you. Here are a few things I think are important if you decide to do something like this:
  1. You have to love what you do. If you don't love writing software, you will not be able to handle the fact that you are spending ALL of your time working. If you love what you do, then you aren't working, you are doing what you love.
  2. You need to have a job where you have time do freelancing. In my case, my boss wanted me to put in 40 hours/wk and no more. I have been at organizations where they believe the own you 24x7. If you are already working 60 hrs/wk or more, you don't really have time to do any freelancing.
  3. Your current employer needs to be aware of what you are doing. In my case, I asked my boss (who also happened to own the business) and he said, "Yes, I think everyone should own their own business". This kind of attitude is rare in the business world, but if you care about your employees, this is the right attitude to have. Sure, you could freelance without talking to your employer, but only do this if you don't care if you will be fired. In many companies, having a "second job" of any kind is grounds for termination. The world is smaller than you think.
  4. You need to be doing something that is not in competition with or interfering with the market of your main job. The customers need to be different, the focus needs to be different and you need to make sure that you are not courting customers that are already customers or potential customers of your main job. This points back to the integrity point. This may be a bit vulgar, but dogs have a rule: "Don't poop at the same place where you eat." It's a good rule for your work life as well.
If the situation is right and you follow the advice above, you can do well freelancing and potentially turn it into a full-time business for yourself. If the situation isn't right and/or you don't follow these rules ... you will be putting both your full-time job and your freelancing career in jeopardy.
