RF Technician Job Description

Radio frequency (RF) refers to the rate of oscillation of electromagnetic radio waves in the range of 3 kHz to 300 GHz, as well as the alternating currents carrying the radio signals. This is the frequency band that is used for communications transmission and broadcasting. Although RF really stands for the rate of oscillation of the waves, it is synonymous to the term "radio," or simply wireless communication.
Radio frequency is being used in a lot of fields, but in the context of information and communications technology it refers to the frequency band at which wireless telecommunications signals are being transmitted and broadcast. The frequency band is being divided into different parts, which are then assigned to different technology industries. This is known as the radio spectrum. For example, the VHF (very high frequency) band, which ranges from 30-300 MHz, is being used for FM radio, TV broadcasts, and amateur radio and its counterparts. For a lot of electronic communication devices, the ultra-high frequency (UHF) band is being used. This is the space used by mobile phones, wireless LAN, Bluetooth, and TV and land radio.
Radio frequency is produced by oscillating current a specified number of times and then radiating it off a conductor, referred to as an antenna, into empty space (this refers to space occupied by air rather than solid objects and does not refer to outer space) as electromagnetic radio waves. RF signals are sent and received using conductors through the phenomenon known as the skin effect, where RF current latches itself and flows through the surface of conductors rather than penetrating and passing through them like it does with other non-conducting solids. This effect is the core and basis of radio technology.

Short for network operations center, the physical space from which a typically large telecommunications network is managed, monitored and supervised. The NOC coordinates network troubles, provides problem management and router configuration services, manages network changes, allocates and manages domain names and IP addresses, monitors routers, switcheshubs and UPS systems that keep the network operating smoothly, manages the distribution and updating of software and coordinates with affiliated networks. Noc Network Engineer Responsibilities

A NOC engineer has several duties in order to ensure the smooth running of the network. They deal with things such as DDoS Attacks, power outages, network failures, and routing black-holes. There are of course the basic roles, such as remote hands, support, configuration of hardware (such as firewalls and routers, purchased by a client). NOC engineers also have to ensure the core network is stable. This can be done by configuring hardware in a way that makes the network more secure, but still has optimal performance. NOC engineers are also responsible for monitoring activity, such as network usage, temperatures etc. They would also have to install equipment, such as KVMs, rack installation, IP-PDU setup, running cabling. The majority of NOC engineers are also on call and have a 5-6 day rotation, working different shifts.
NOCs are frequently laid out with several rows of desks, all facing a video wall, which typically shows details of highly significant alarms, ongoing incidents and general network performance; a corner of the wall is sometimes used for showing a news or weather TV channel, as this can keep the NOC technicians aware of current events which may affect the network or systems they are responsible for. The back wall of a NOC is sometimes glazed; there may be a room attached to this wall which is used by members of the team responsible for dealing with serious incidents to meet while still able to watch events unfolding within the NOC. Individual desks are generally assigned to a specific network, technology or area. A technician may have several computer monitors on their desk, with the extra monitors used for monitoring the systems or networks covered from that desk. The location housing a NOC may also contain many or all of the primary servers and other equipment essential to running the network, although it is not uncommon for a single NOC to monitor and control a number of geographically dispersed sites.

Network Operations Center (NOC) Analyst

POSITION SUMMARY
The Network Operations Center (NOC) Analyst performs technical analysis of system issues and outages as they occur across customer enterprise networks. This individual then performs research to troubleshoot and resolve the issue or, depending upon complexity, escalates the issue to higher-level systems administrators and network engineers. The NOC Analyst is responsible for researching and documenting various mitigation strategies, and must maintain current and thorough knowledge of customer technologies and their significance to customer operations.  This individual must be able to prioritize remediation of issues in a 24 x 7 environment with critical up time requirements. The NOC analyst may also perform basic system administration tasks such as network/system troubleshooting, patching operating systems and applications, and executing various scripts.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Typical duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide timely response to all incidents, outages and performance alerts. Categorize issues for escalation to appropriate technical teams
  • Recognize, identify and prioritize incidents in accordance with customer business requirements, organizational policies and operational impact
  • Collect and review performance reports for various systems, and report trends in hardware and application performance to assist senior technical personnel to predict future issues or outages
  • Monitor a wide variety of information and network systems that include, but are not limited to telecommunications circuits, LAN/WAN systems, routers, switches, firewalls, VoIP systems, servers, storage, backup, operating systems and core applications
  • Document all actions in accordance with standard company policies and procedures
  • Notify customer and third-party service providers of issues, outages and remediation status
  • Work with internal and external technical and service teams to create and/or update knowledge base articles
  • Perform basic systems testing and operational tasks (installation of patches, network connectivity testing, script execution, etc.)
  • Support multiple technical teams in 24 x 7 environment operational environments with high uptime requirements. Varied shift schedules may include day or evening hours.
